Karl began swimming competitively around the age of 8 and quickly fell in love with the sport. He went on to become one of the top butterflyers in his home state of New Jersey. Following his high school success, he swam for the Columbia University men’s varsity team, where he focused on butterfly and backstroke. After graduating in 2013, he began coaching for a number of masters’ teams throughout the city, settling in as a regular TNYA coach in 2015.
In his training, Karl knew swim sets could become boring and monotonous all too often and quickly. He loves to lead practices that keep swimmers mentally engaged and focused on a variety of key skills. He is also a firm believer in the power of proper technique, and loves tweaking swimmers’ strokes and witnessing their improvement and breakthroughs at all skill levels.
Outside of the pool, Karl works in the creative services and graphic design field and creates his own artwork and illustrations in his spare time.
