About TNYA Water Polo
TNYA water polo, founded in 1991, is a co-ed masters water polo team based in New York City. TNYA features players of a wide range of age and ability and welcomes both newcomers and those who have played competitively for years. The squad competes locally, nationally, and internationally. Membership includes lesbians, gay men, and friends of the gay community. We are a member of International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics (IGLA).
Our team has competed annually in the IGLA championships since 1992. Besides competing in the Gay Games every four years, we also play several tournaments throughout each year, including in Toronto, San Francisco, and Washington DC. Of late, we have taken part in regular competition for tournament championships, but also enjoy a recreational level for those interested in gaining some more experience.
Practices are held on Sundays from 5:00-6:30PM at Asphalt Green, 91st Street and York Avenue. Sunday practices require a monthly payment to AG for $25, made at the front desk, with temporary drop-ins available for $10/practice. Please email us at waterpolo@tnya.org for availability of drop-in payment.
Another practice is held on Tuesday from 7:30-8:30PM at the Chelsea Rec Center, 25th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. Practices on Tuesday require a membership to the Rec Center for only $75 for the year (see the NYC Parks & Rec website for details). Drop-ins are not permitted by the Rec Center.
Sunday practice focuses on scrimmaging while Tuesdays are primarily focused on conditioning and water polo fundamentals.
If you continue to play with TNYA, you must become a member of US Water Polo. You can register at its website, www.usawaterpolo.com. You must also pay annual dues to TNYA.
