Jump On In!
(or, how to join TNYA)
Water Polo
If you're interested in working out with our water polo squad, you'll need to pay the annual TNYA membership fee of $30; you'll also need to join USA Water Polo, which you can do via its website. For more details on our water polo team, see the water polo page.
Competitive / Fitness Swimming: How Much Experience?
(If you've been an age-group swimmer or a masters swimmer prior to this point, you can skip this bit and read about signing up.)
TNYA welcomes swimmers of just about all ability levels. Our workouts are run so that experienced swimmers and those who are new to masters swimming can swim together. However, there are usually 2 coaches on deck to look after 15-30 swimmers. So we ask for at least some degree of swimming self-sufficiencyotherwise, we've found that the experience tends to be frustrating for swimmers and coaches alike.
At the very least, we ask that our new members:
- Feel comfortable swimming 25 yards of freestylethat's the standard crawl strokewithout stopping. 25 yards takes you from one end of the pool to the other.
- Feel comfortable putting their faces in the water
- Feel comfortable swimming over deep water.
- Are willing to stay in the water for the full 90 minuteseven if they need to pull over and take some deep breaths from time to time.
- Finally, an awareness of the existence of the other three competitive strokesbackstroke, breast stroke, and butterflyis helpful.
Sound good? Then jump down to Signing Up.
On the other hand, if you feel like you'll need basic swim instruction before you're ready to do all these things, that's more than we will be able to offer you with any degree of reliability. Our coaches do their best to help everybody out, but there are a lot of folks in the pool. For lessons for beginning swimmers, we suggest contacting local organizations like the YMCA or YWCA. We also have a couple of former TNYA swimmers/coaches who offer private swim lessons, and we will be happy to recommend them to you. Contact us if you'd like to be put in touch with one of them.
Competitive / Fitness Swimming: Signing Up
Joining the team is pretty easy, actually: just show up. Your first week's workouts are even free!
Show up a little early for your first practice: the gatekeeper on duty will have you fill out a couple of forms, all contained in the TNYA Welcome Pack. (We need your signature on the forms for insurance purposes before you get in the water, but there's no financial commitment at that point.)
Membership Costs
TNYA offers three ways to pay for workouts:
- Swimmers can subscribe to as many weekly workouts as they please at the beginning of each session. The per-workout fee drops as you subscribe to more workouts per week and ranges between $8.50 and $9. In cases where too many folks show up for a workout, subscribers get priority until 15 minutes into practice.
- Swimmers can buy Splash Cards. Splash Cards are pre-paid workouts, bought in batches of 6 ($78) or 12 ($156). The cards are transferrable and can be shared or sold.
- It's more expensive, but you are also welcome to just show up. The workout fee for drop-in swimmers is $15.
To subscribe or buy a splash card for the current session, just download a subscription form and mail it to us at Team New York Aquatics, 301 E 87 Apt. 3C, New York, NY 10128. (This form is also part of the TNYA Welcome Pack, above; you can also get copies of these forms when you come by for your first workout, which as we may have mentioned is free.)
