IGLA 2007: Paris

After a strong 90+ TNYAers showing in Chicago Gay Games, an expected downsized 30 crossed the pond to take part in the sweet 16 IGLA competition. The team came out swinging, with Chris P, Peter I, Peter K, John K, Helen L & Scott C all contributing to wining the 3rd medium-size team out of 66 teams & 606 swimmers. 43 IGLA records were rewritten & 3 of them came from our very own Helen L.
Day 1 opened with the longest event the 1500m which saw underwear-contest winner Eugene S in a rare win over Peter M, after having just landed 2 hours prior. Eugene took 4th (21:58-opening 1:18, holding 1:30s, closing 1:30), while Peter M 5th (22:04-opening 1:21,holding 1:29, closing 1:25). Larry S, in his first of a series of torturous events, finished 7th (28:19-opening 1:42, pacing 1:55s, closing 1:51). A popular team distance event had 7 TNYAers race the 400IM. Chris P unleashed a 5:30 (with a 1:07 fly leg) to take 4th. Eugene in an unfortunate false start and DQed, but finished at 5:37. Randy C scored 6th (6:40), and behind him at 9th was Bill C (7:09) in his PR. Matt M scored 3rd (5:48) in his first meet. Tom M came home to 4th (6:50), and Larry S continued his marathon of events taking 6th (8:00).
Day 2 had our first relay team of Helen L(:50), John K(:51), Peter K(:29), Kathleen J (:40) take top honors (2:50). 100 Fly (aka Papillon) had speedster Chris P take bronze (1:03). Scot C, in a rare event, was out-touched to 5th (1:04). Eugene S came in at 10th (1:13) creating his PR. Kozo added points with his 11th placing (1:17). Charlie C placed 3rd (1:15), behind him was Tom M @ 5th (1:33) & Larry S (1:50). Our weakest stroke was backstroke (aka Dos), starring one teammate, newcomer Matt M clocking 2:44 and earning 10th in the 200. The 200IM had Bunny/Scott hit the wall producing bronze (2:22) with the 2nd-fastest breast leg (:41), while Bill C nailed his PB and took 12th (3:23). Tom M claimed 4th (3:09), while Richard P went out too fast (:38) and faded to 5th (3:20). Our strongest stroke, the breast (aka Brasse) mined us a triple set of golds in the 50 sprint, starting with our 1st individual female swim, Michelle D (:42); joining her as a winner were Peter K (:35) & John K (1:07). Bootilicious Peter I, with a late start & long finish, still managed a bronze (:33); Matt F clocked a :36 to 6th; Mark B placed 8th (:38); Kent L scored a PB to 19th (:43); and Tom M came in 7th (:43). The 200Fr had Kathy J take 7th (3:06). Peter I, in a tough heat, came in strong to 4th, just missing the medals (2:10, opening with a fast half at 1:02). Nadeem G turned in even splits to place 15th (2:47). Randy C crawled to 11th at 2:45, while Matt M claimed 8th (2:18), followed by Kozo S (2:33) claiming 14th. Tom G, in his PR, took 10th (2:44). The 4X100 Medley had the foursome of Scott C (1:07), Peter I (1:10), Chris P (1:04), and Peter M (1:05) win the bronze. Team Matt M (1:16), Kent L (1:38), Eugene (1:12), and Randy C (1:14) took 12th (5:20). Team Charlie C (1:15), Peter K (1:21), Kozo S (1:17), and Michael D (1:10) took silver (5:03); Team Tom G (1:29), Mark B (1:29), Tom M (1:32), and Larry S (1:26) took 4th (5:56). Mixed team Kathleen (1:39), Michelle D (1:34), Onesimo (1:10), and James B (1:19) claimed 4th (5:43).
Day 3 opened with Helen L delivering her first of 3 IGLA records: 1:58 in the 100Fr. Eugene S hit the pads at 15th (1:08), followed by Nadeem at 27th (1:15). Bill C improved his PB to claim 24th (1:17). Kozo S took 18th (1:07). Mark B placed 16th (1:13). Tom G lowers his PR to 1:17 and took 12th. The 50 Dos had Nadeem G take 10th (:45). Michael D impressed with (:37) and won silver. John K won his 2nd Gold (1:04). Our strongest event, the 200 Brasse, produced 3 golden performances: Peter I in a comfortable win at 2:37 with the meet's 5th-fastest time; Scott C, in his best event, adding some bling with the meet's 3rd fastest time (2:35); and Peter K scoring the 3rd gold (3:10). Newcomer Joe Lim finished 7th (4:29). The 50 Papillon had Kozo take 12th (:32). James B claimed 13th (:42). Charlie C won bronze (:30), Michael D touched 7th (:34), Richard P took 13th (:37). The 4X100Fr relay of Peter M (in a delayed start at 1:05), Peter I (:58), Chris P (:59), and Scot C (1:00) took bronze (4:01), while team Randy C (1:14), Kent L (1:23), James B, and Mat M took 10th (4:27?). Team Mike D (1:10), Mark B (1:13), Kozo S (1:09), and Charlie C (1:03) took 13th (4:35). Team Helen L (1:56-rebroke record 2nd time), Tom G (1:16), Kathleen J (1:25), and Richard P in a close call (1:23) took silver (6:00). The 800Fr had 7 distance kings. Chris P take bronze (9:48-opening with 1:06, pacing 1:15 & closing 1:18). Joe Lim took 8th (15:54-opening 1:43, holding 2:02, closing 1:57). Yours truly took 5th (10:40 despite google leakage-opening with 1:10, pacing 1:19 closing 1:18). For the second time, Eugene surpased distance king Peter M with his 11:19.27 to Peter's 11:19.72. Eugene opened with 1:16, paced 1:28, and closed 1:24, while Peter opened with 1:16, paced 1:28, and closed 1:19. Tom G impressed in his debut as a distance king with 11:51, opening with 1:25, pacing 1:30, and closing 1:25, earning 4th place. Larry S continued his distance fetish taking 8th (14:41 opening with 1:42, pacing 1:52, closing 1:47).
Day 4, the final day of competition, began with 30 heats turned on their fast-twitch muscle fibers and battled it out for the shortest race the 50Fr. Helen L scored her final IGLA record with her :49 effort; Mark B muscled his way to :32, earning 16th. Following him was Kent L creating a PR at :35. Charlie C proved he still has it by taking took 4th with an impressive :28. John K took his 3rd Gold (:51). The 100 Brasse scored some top rankings. Peter I, with the meet's 5th-fastest time, took silver (1:11). Scott C took silver also (1:12). Matthew F. took 8th (1:23). Kent L took 20th (1:40). Peter K ruled his age group by 10 seconds, celebrating victory with a 1:22. John K, proving that swimming is an ageless sport, won his 4th gold (2:30) as the competition's oldest member. The 200 Papillon brought 5 TNYA swimmers to endure some pain. Chris P fought for silver (2:29) opening with a 1:06. Yours truly also took silver (2:44). Randy C claimed 6th (3:27). Larry S in his final gruesome event took 6th (4:14) while Prescott V in a great effort was unfortunately DQ. The 100 Dos had Tom G take 9th (1:31), followed by Prescott V (1:48). John K win his final gold Number 5 (2:28). The 400Fr had only 1 teammate, Chris P, who in a gutsy swim after losing his goggles in the start hit the pads @ 4:49 and claimed 6th. The final individual event, the 100IM, had Kathleen J touching in at 7th (1:40). Matt F took lucky 13th (1:21), Peter M earned 14th (1:24), Bill C claimed 17th (1:30), Michael D clocked 5th with a impressive (1:19), Richard P with improved turns grabed 9th (1:29). The final relay 4X50 Medley of Scott C (:31), Peter I (:33), Chris P (:28), and Onesimo (:28) earned 4th (2:01). Team of Matt M (:35), Matt F (:37), Eugene S (:30), and Peter M (:29) claimed 10th (2:11). Team of Charlie C (:34), Peter K (:36), Kozo S (:32), and Michael D (:29) out-touched in a tight race and won silver (2:11).
